Over 2.1 million people live with limb loss in the United States today. That's a lot of people! You might be wondering why you never see these people when you're out.
The answer is that you do see them. You don't often notice those people's missing limbs. And that's due in large part to the work of qualified technicians and prosthetists at Active Life and elsewhere.
Prostheses have come a long way in their capabilities. Let us show you what we can do with them!

Custom-Crafting Today's Prostheses
While artificial limbs aren't yet at the point of natural human body movement, they move in ways that their wearers are more easily able to control than previously.
ComponentsProstheses today need to be lightweight to make them more agile and responsive. So, their main components include aluminum and titanium alloys for the pylon, which is the part that replaces the lower leg. Pylons made from carbon fiber are coming soon. Various plastics also form the artificial limb and are used in everything from the socket (where the prosthesis connects to the body) to the foam and artificial skin that cover the socket and give it a more realistic appearance. |
Measuring and FittingBoard-certified technicians measure the intended wearer's body in impeccable detail and make casts of critical areas to ensure a precise fit for the prosthesis. The technicians make a plaster cast of the stump for even greater precision. This entire process is tailored to the individual who will wear the prosthesis. Very few parts are mass-produced. |
